Alice Coachman was the first Black woman to win an Olympic Gold Medal! In 1948, she won the high jump at the London Olympics. She earned 34 national titles and was officially inducted into the National Track-and-Field Hall of Fame in 1975 + U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004!!!!

In 1864, Rebecca Lee Crumpler was the first Black woman to earn an M.D.! Today, we honor Dr. Crumpler for her achievements and celebrate her for paving the way for the next generation.


Critically acclaimed writer and activist, Langston Hughes, was also a leader of the Harlem Renaissance, a time of art, culture, and social reform in New York in the 1920s. This multi-talented leader has made a lasting impact on American literature and history. #HeTookAction
